Abstract:
»Gukurahundi is a very notorious concept in Zimbabwe, especially in the two Matabeleland provinces and the Midlands Province, most probably, due to 20,000 lives of civilians it claimed as an operation. The crack army unit, also known by same name or the Fifth Brigade, which carried out the massacre, was at the centre of the operation. This paper traces the origins of the name Gukurahundi, its meaning, and the philosophy behind it. The onomastic reading of the name Gukurahundi, framed by the metaphor and othering lens, helps the paper unpack various conceptualisations of the infamous term, mainly by the people of the two Matabeleland provinces and some parts of the Midlands Province and even its planners and executors. The article concludes that the government of Zimbabwe needs to honestly acknowledge its role in the operation and take responsibility to resolve the issues that are associated with the term.«
